What Is an Ijazah?
An Ijazah (إجازة) is a formal Islamic scholarly certification — a written authorisation from a qualified scholar certifying that the recipient has demonstrated mastery of Quran recitation (or memorisation) at the required level and is permitted to teach others. The word literally means "permission" or "authorisation."
What makes the Ijazah unique in human educational history is its system of transmission. Unlike a university degree issued by an institution, an Ijazah connects the recipient to a specific human chain of scholars — each one having received the Ijazah from the one before, stretching back through 1,400 years of Islamic scholarship to the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, and through them to the Prophet ﷺ himself.

The Unbroken Chain — Silsilah
The chain of Ijazah transmission is called a Silsilah (سلسلة — "chain"). When you receive an Ijazah, your certificate lists your teacher, your teacher's teacher, their teacher, and so on — all the way back through history. This chain is meticulously documented and verified. Any break in the chain would invalidate the Ijazah.
This is not merely a historical curiosity — it is the primary mechanism by which the Quran has been preserved in its exact original form. Because every reciter's pronunciation and Tajweed must be verified by a scholar whose own recitation was verified, the quality standard has been maintained with extraordinary consistency across fourteen centuries and dozens of cultures and languages.

Ijazah in Recitation (Riwayah Hafs an Asim)
The most common Ijazah — certifying that the recipient can recite the entire Quran with correct Tajweed according to the Hafs narration (the most widely used globally). This is what most Muslims seeking an Ijazah pursue.
Ijazah in Memorisation (Hifz)
Certifying that the recipient has memorised the entire Quran with correct Tajweed and can recite any part from memory without error.

How to Obtain an Ijazah Online
Yes — it is entirely possible, and thousands of Muslims have obtained Ijazah entirely through online study. The process:
- Master Tajweed — You must be able to recite the entire Quran with correct, verified Tajweed. This is a prerequisite.
- Study under a teacher with Ijazah — Your teacher must themselves hold an Ijazah in order to pass it on. This is a critical requirement — an Ijazah cannot be granted by someone who does not hold one.
- Complete the full Quran recitation — You must recite the entire Quran to your teacher (in sessions over time) with your errors corrected and Tajweed verified throughout.
- Pass the final examination — A formal session in which you demonstrate your recitation quality to the examining scholar.
- Receive your Ijazah document — A formal written certificate listing the full Silsilah (chain) back to the Prophet ﷺ.
How Long Does It Take to Get an Ijazah?
The timeline depends entirely on your current Tajweed level. A student who already reads the Quran with good Tajweed may complete the Ijazah process in 1–2 years of dedicated study. A beginner starting from Noorani Qaida should expect 3–5 years of consistent study before being ready for Ijazah examination.
